How I started a blog in less than 24 hours

“How do I start a blog?”

“I want to start a blog”

I get these blogging questions many times.

By the end of this post you will learn how to start a blog in less than 24 hours.

Plus there is also something for you at the end, so stick with me.

I started this blog in a day and you too can.

Before I tell you that, let me first help you understand what a blog is.

A blog is just like a website. The difference however is that a blog is dynamic and website is usually static with few pages.

Businesses use blog posts to educate their audience, promote themselves and as a brand you can do the same.

Let’s get back to the topic,

Start a blog in less than 24 hours

Step 1. Brainstorm a topic to write about

If you want to create a blog and become a successful blogger, you need to focus on something specific.

This will help you attract the right audience and help you help them properly.

Remember that your blog cannot be for everyone and that is absolutely fine, I need you to read that again.

Your blog cannot be for everyone and that is absolutely fine.

Your blog is for a specific group of people with common interest.

For instance, this blog is for people living with chronic illness and are interested in online business. Very specific.

How to brainstorm a topic for your blog

When brainstorming a topic, there are three questions to ask yourself,

  • Am I interested in or passionate about this topic?

I believe everything starts with interest (passion).

If you are interested in a topic, it will definitely fuel your curiosity to want to learn about it.

Blogging for me started as an interest. I saw other bloggers and was like, I can do this. Interest.

  • Do I enjoy learning about this topic?

Blogging is a career that requires you to keep updating your knowledge.

No matter how much you know, you need to keep reading and learning about your industry and even outside your industry.

So you really need to ask yourself, do you enjoy learning about the topic?

Whenever I see a post or article about blogging or online business, I get excited and eager to learn.

Do you feel the same for whatever topic you choose to write about?

  • Are there other people interested in this topic?

The goal of every blogger is to own a blog that has millions of visitors per month. Including me.

To get to that stage, you need to attract people who are interested in the same topic.

These people, no matter how small, will become your fans, your community and the best part, they will support you in any form.

These three questions will give you a head start and help you find a topic to start with.

Things will get better as you write on.

Step 2. Pick blog name

It is time to pick a name for your blog.

Some tips when picking a name for your blog,

  • Use your name or pseudonym, I’m sure you’d have seen blogs with the owner’s name or a pseudonym.

If you haven’t, here are some examples. Neil Patel, Linda Ikeji, sisi yemmie.

  • Use the aim of the blog, You can use the aim of your blog to name as well.

For instance, the name ambitious warrior gives a bit of insight to what to expect. Making sense of cents does the same.

  • Be creative; you can let your creativity play out by mixing words, using other languages.

Remember that whatever name you choose becomes your brand and it is how you will be remembered yet you do not have to spend too much time thinking about your blog name.

Step 3. Register a domain name

This is where your journey to becoming a blogger begins. Your domain name is your blog name.

For example, mine is Domain names come in different prices depending on the level of the domain you want to use.

.com for instance which is the most common level domain is less than $8 per month. It is most popular and I recommend it.

If you are in Nigeria, you can get a .com domain for as low as 5000 naira from Domain King.

There are other domains like, .ng, .net and all of these come at different prices lower than .com

I use Domain King and if you want, you can get a .com domain for less than 5000 naira per year and web hosting of 400 naira per month.

Trust me, this is the cheapest and most reliable domain in Nigeria. They also have a 24/7 customer service to help you through anything.

Step 4 Buy a web hosting

A domain name and a web hosting is the backbone of your blog.

Without a domain name, your blog will not have an address and your blog would not be seen without a web hosting.

Web hosting is a service that allows your blog to be accessed through the internet.

I like to think of a blog domain as a house and web hosting as the land where the house is built.

Hence, when you buy only domain name then you own a house not a land which means that there are some things limited to you.

It is safe to say you need both domain name and web hosting to start a blog.

A web hosting is about $10 or less and some are higher but you don’t really need to spend much on web hosting when you’re just starting.

You can upgrade to higher packages when you have large number of blog visitors per month.

Step 5 Pick a blogging platform – WordPress preferably

You cannot run or manage your blog without a blogging platform. WordPress is the most popular platform.

It is free, easy to use and very friendly.

Step 6 Install and start your blog

After getting your domain name and web hosting, you will be given a control panel where you can install WordPress.

This is what a control panel looks like,
