Do you want to be like your favorite content creator? Here’s everything you need to know about content creation and content marketing. Let’s begin with content marketing.
Content marketing is one of the most used forms of marketing by marketers, this is because content involves storytelling and there is no better way to engage with humans than using stories.
According to Hubspot, 91% of business-to-business (b2b) professionals use content marketing as part of their strategy.
Marketers have used stories to promote their products and services long before the internet which means that content has been used forever.
But with the invention of the internet, it is now so easy to create content and also to consume content. Billions of content are published on the internet every hour and you consume billions as well.
And with the introduction of social media, contents are closer. The internet has changed our world, the job industry has changed too and that is why becoming a content creator is now a possible career.
In this post, I am going to share with you how you can become a content creator but before that, I want you to know some things about content creators. Who do you think a content creator is?
Who is a content creator?
A content creator is someone who produces entertaining, educating, or inspiring material that caters to the interest and challenges of an audience.
Everyone creates content. The only difference between you and your favorite content creator is that they create content with intention. I know you have believed different things about content creators so let’s talk about them first.
Myths you might have believed about content creators
- They are content writers
You might have believed that content creators are content writers. Well, some content creators are content writers but many are not.
It all depends on the type of content you decided to create. Content creators that produce video content are not content writers.
Similarly, if you decide to produce audio content, you are not a content writer. So content creators are not content writers.
- Content creators do nothing but take pictures and post for the gram
This is a very common myth. People see content creators as unserious people and they need to get a real job.
Hey! Being a content creator is a real job. There is so much that goes into creating one piece of content before publishing it and even after publishing it, you still have to make sure it gets seen.
A content creator’s job is to produce contents that resonate with the audience and that requires a lot of steps.
- It is easy to make money as a content creator
Lies, making money as a content creator requires certain skills and it is not so easy.
If you want to become a content creator because of money or the lifestyle, fine, but you need to be ready to do the work.
There’s a lot of work that goes into creating content that would make your audience dash you their money.
- Content creators are special people with special lifestyle
Okay seriously, there was a time I thought content creators were special people and they had to live a certain way. I was wrong.
There is a difference between a content creator and an influencer. Your favorite content creator with so many followers is an influencer and that is why you love them so much and stay glued on their page.
Being a content creator does not make you an influencer but as an influencer, you have to create content.
Everyone creates content and anyone can be like their favorite content creator if you follow the steps below
How to become a content creator
1. Pick a niche
Okay, so let me spill some truth.
Every niche needs a content creator and that is why anybody can become a content creator. Many content creators go for beauty, fashion, or lifestyle. These three niches are the most popular and there is so much opportunity because of the size of the industry.
Your niche is just the topic you decide to create content around and it could be a topic or different topics that are related.
No matter the niche you pick, you can produce contents that will resonate with your audience and become an influencer.
When picking a niche, make sure you’re
- Passionate about that niche
- Willing to learn new things in and outside the niche
2. Find the right platform
So you got your niche, now you need a platform. Somewhere you can publish your content.
When picking a platform, it is important to pick the right one by playing to your strength. If you write well, creating content on a blog like this one is a good choice.
Maybe you are a photographer and want to share your photography skills with the world, Instagram would be a better platform because it is a visual-based platform.
YouTube is best for video content and creating videos on YouTube would be a great idea if you are comfortable with making videos.
The point is, pick whatever platform you feel comfortable on and start producing content.
3. Understand your target audience
As a content creator, your primary goal is to engage your target audience. You need to understand who you are creating content for before creating. Ask yourself,
- What age group are they?
- Where do they hangout?
Get as much information about them as possible. This will help you create contents that are relatable to them which in turn creates trust.
So whenever you are creating content, keep your target audience in mind.
4. Stay on top of your industry
Remember when I said you need to be willing to learn? Yeah, you need to learn about your industry as much as you can. Stay updated with anything fresh in your industry.
Staying on top of your industry is one way to position yourself as an expert and that as well creates trust.
5. Be unique
Yeah, I know you want to be like your favorite creator but they are chosen already. The only person that is not chosen is you.
You need to be authentic. People will know if you are faking it, if you are trying to someone else, trust me people would know and that would hurt your career.
Be you and most importantly, be vulnerable.
People think being vulnerable is weak but no, it shows strength, it shows that you are human and people only connect with humans. Share your mistakes, your struggles, and of course your win with your audience. Don’t have a fixed life.
6. Curate content
Let’s face it, sometimes you will not feel like creating content. Your creativity would fail and it would make you want to quit.
When this happens, you can turn to content curation (at least that’s what I do in order to show up).
Content curation is when you share content created by someone else. You can add your own point of view to it or just share and mention the original creator.
Curating contents help you connect with other content creators. It improves the connection.
7. Network at every opportunity
If you want to grow as a content creator, you cannot do it alone. You need to network as much as possible.
Whenever you can, attend events where you meet other creators, connect on social media, follow their work and give shout out to your favorite creators.
8. Be consistent
Consistency is underrated.
It is so important to stay consistent when you trying to become a content creator. There will be days you won’t feel like yourself, there will be days you want to give up but don’t.
Showing up regularly is the only way to stay in the mind of your audience. So before you start your journey of content creation, ask yourself how much time you can spare.
You could decide to publish content every Monday and Wednesday, that’s fine. Make sure you show up every single Monday and Wednesday no matter what you feel like.
Remember that consistency builds trust.

One big secret about being a content creator is that you have to build trust with your audience and that happens through your content. The trust you build is what makes them drop their thoughts on your content, like it, and even share it.
Building trust does not happen overnight, just as you cannot become and make money as a content creator overnight. It takes consistency. Showing up regularly with content your audience can relate with.
Content creation requires hard work, patience, and dedication so to become a content creator, you need to keep these three points in mind.
